Alapana’s Retro Bridal Looks from Sangeeth to Wedding

Last Updated: October 31, 2026

At a glance

Alapana wanted soft glam makeup and a retro touch across her Bangalore wedding celebrations. Her long natural hair was central to the brief. I planned the makeup around her features and coordinated the hairstyles, from a half updo for Sangeeth to a 1960s Bollywood-inspired wedding look and loose waves with her wine-coloured reception lehenga.

Alapana had been following my work before we met. Family friends had already had their makeup done by me, so she came with a sense of the work she liked. Her own brief was quite specific: she wanted glamour, but also something subtle in the makeup. Hair mattered a great deal to her.

For her October 2025 celebrations in Bangalore, that gave us a direction to work with. Each function could have its own look, while the retro influence and her long natural hair connected the styling.

A clear brief before the wedding looks

At the trial, Alapana explained that she wanted soft glam across her wedding looks. Her references had a fairytale influence as well as a retro feel. The task was to translate those preferences into makeup and hair that suited her, rather than repeat one reference at every function.

I considered her face shape and the natural downturn of her eyes when planning the makeup. I planned the eye definition with her overall glam brief in mind. I discussed the hairstyles and directed the hairstylist accordingly, planning her hair alongside the makeup from the beginning.

Sangeeth with a half updo and more eye definition

For Sangeeth, the look moved towards smokey eyes and a luminous base, with her long hair in a half updo. She wore a colourful silk lehenga with a purple drape. The change in eye definition gave this function its own makeup direction.

The Sangeeth photograph shows the hairstyle from the side, including the ornaments woven into the half updo. It is a useful view of the finished styling alongside the closer wedding portrait.

A retro wedding hairstyle with an orange Kanchi saree

For the wedding, Alapana wore an orange Kanchi saree. I used airbrush makeup and tapered lashes, with a 1960s Bollywood-inspired hairstyle. The shaped front, flowers and traditional jewellery made this a different look from the half updo at Sangeeth.

In the close-up portrait, you can see the eye definition and the way the front of the hair sits beside the forehead jewellery. The saree, hair and makeup belong in the same conversation. A hairstyle reference on its own cannot show how those details will look together.

This is the kind of coordination we discuss when planning South Indian bridal makeup: how the makeup, hairstyle and saree styling will work with the bride’s chosen outfit and jewellery.

Loose waves for the reception

The wine-coloured reception lehenga brought another change. The makeup used richer tones and defined features, while the hair was worn in loose waves. The retro influence continued, but the reception did not repeat the wedding hairstyle.

Alapana’s longer plan also included a fairytale-inspired engagement look and a Kanchi saree for Varpooja. Those were part of the brief we discussed. The photographs selected here focus on Sangeeth, the wedding and reception, where we can show the changes clearly.

What connected Alapana’s looks

The common thread was her preference for soft glam with a retro touch. Her outfits and hairstyles changed, and the makeup was planned with those changes in mind. Her long natural hair remained an important part of the styling throughout.

If you are planning several functions, bring your hairstyle references alongside your outfits and jewellery. Explain which parts of a reference you like, especially when you want something subtle in one area and more defined in another. Alapana’s brief gave us room to make those choices before creating the finished looks.
