Myth Vs. Reality Check: Being A Makeup Artist Is Convenient and Has Lots of Money!

Welcome! Finally you are here and I am assuming because you are thinking about becoming a makeup artist or you are already one. In this article I am going to be blunt because this is a reality check and you must know what you are up against.

In the recent years Makeup Artistry as a profession has taken a huge leap and this is a fact. As more and more Indians are becoming image conscious online and offline the “looks” have become all over relevant again. Inner beauty is more important they say and I agree it’s an absolutely wonderful way to think however what the harm in looking flawless and neat?

No one can deny the fact that when you look good you feel good and when you feel good you are more likely to be happier and successful. However wisdom, knowledge, patience and other virtues are the soul and baseline characteristic of humans, I don’t want you to ever forget that.

You must have come across a handsome dude who looks drop dead hunk however as soon you started your conversation …. Damn! The way he spoke becomes a major turn off and all of a sudden the same guy look uneducated and cheap.

Alright done with the gyan! Let us talk about a professional makeup artist and mindset you must have if you are planning to be a successful one. Read till the end.

5 Myth Vs. Reality Check for Makeup Artistry as a profession

Myth 1: Makeup Artistry is convenient and easy

Reality: I have had many students walking into our academy severely delusional about this industry. Well they saw a friend being a makeup artist taking fat money for a bridal makeover or they saw a makeup artist selfie with a celebrity. They felt that becoming or being a professional makeup artist is easy and convenient and they won’t have to stress out that much as they do in their so called 9 to 5 job.

First thing first if you hate your 9 to 5 job then you are going to hate this one even more. You will have to work in every festival , There is no fixed weekend off, There is no fixed timing and there is no fixed source of income that you will earn X amount every month provided you are working for a salon which is something I do not consider a pro makeup artist in India.

Being a freelancer makeup artist is as touch as a nut and if you want to become one just because of this reason then sorry to break your heart you have chosen a wrong career destination.

Myth 2: Makeup Artist make huge money

Reality: Another bummer! If they did then every single person would have become a makeup artist right? Like any other profession you need to perform, be unique, market and sell. There is no guarantee of job or projects if your work is average and not targeting the right client segment.

Yes it has high returns however whenever we talk about big money then in the same breath we must talk about had work and commitment.

Huge Money = Blood + Sweat divided by smart work.

Myth 3: Learning makeup is not a big deal

Reality: Come on now! Are you kidding me? Just because you can cook doesn’t make you a chef right? Just because you can play cricket doesn’t make you Dhoni. Similarly just because you can do makeup on yourself and add Instagram filters doesn’t make you a professional makeup artist. People spent years to perfect this art. It is an artistry which you can learn but to perfect it you will take years of experience and practice. Makeup is darn difficult to its perfection and you know what even more difficult is to make your client happy. Beauty is subjective! Someone may like and someone may not. It’s a full-fledged business of art.

If not then you wouldn’t have seen Katrina Kaif teaching makeup and releasing her own product line at the fag end of her professional career as an actor.

Myth 4: I look ordinary and not beautiful which means I cannot become an artist.

Reality: You said it all the answer is in your statement. First of all if you look ordinary and know it then what are you doing about it? Please mind it you have no control on your beauty, your beauty quotient has been defined by your ancestor DNA. What you do have control is look presentable and well groomed. Clients are not expecting a Bollywood star , They are expecting a makeup artist who should be well groomed, clean, hygienic, well-spoken and smart. Your personality must be attractive and the makeup you are wearing has to be flawless.

Clients will be like – if she cannot groom herself and give herself a makeover then then what is she going to do me.

Hence this myth is a reality if you don’t do anything about it. You are a beauty ambassador

Myth 5: Beautician and Makeup Artists are the same

Reality: Both, beautician and makeup artists are from the same industry but both are poles apart. Beautician is more about skin care, hair etc. while makeup artists are all about makeup, hair styling and draping of dresses. Beauticians sometimes do makeup on the clients as well but there is nothing extra ordinary in that. A professional makeup artist is a subject matter expert and gives you unmatched experience which no salon can provide. If the client can afford, cares about the image and loves to have a premium and highly skilled experience then they would book a professional.

Okay so here you have it. If you are looking forward to become a professional makeup artist then the first step is broaden your outlook and be ready to work hard and smart. Maintain your uniqueness, Learn technology and social media and most importantly practice every day!
